OUR ENVIRONMENT

Carrier bags

When Netto first came to the UK in 1990 our approach of charging for carrier bags was revolutionary – no one else was doing it. But today all the major retailers are following our lead.

So why do we charge for carrier bags?

Well, at Netto, we like to give our customers the choice of buying a carrier so that we can concentrate on keeping our prices low. You may not need one and we are conscious of our environmental responsibilities. So we also ask customers to pay for bags to hopefully encourage re-use. We even offer carrier bags which are themselves made from 100% recycled material to try and help a bit more.

By working this way, we can save you money and help the environment at the same time.

Packaging and recycling

At Netto all our cardboard and plastic packaging form stores and our distribution centres is recycled. We also have low-voltage energy saving lighting in all stores.

Rain water is also drained from our supermarket roofs, recycled, and used in our kitchens and toilets while heat emissions from refrigeration units are used to heat our stores.

All these initiatives help Netto to help the environment and keep costs low for our customers.

Electrical/Electronic Waste Recycling

In July 2007 the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (‘WEEE’) came into force to encourage people to arrange collection or recycling of old electrical products rather than throwing them away.

Electrical and electronic equipment contain substances that can be hazardous to the environment, human health and wildlife if they are not disposed of properly.

The majority of electrical items which are thrown away can be repaired or recycled. Recycling helps save natural resources and reduces the environmental and health effects which are associated with the disposal of electrical goods in landfill sites.

All new electrical and electronic products sold now carry the ‘crossed out’ wheelie bin logo to remind you to recycle them at the end of their life.

In-store Take-Back – What you should do

If you are purchasing an electrical/electronic item from Netto we will take the waste product which you are replacing on a ‘like for like’ basis. You must ensure that the product is clean and safe*, for example no sharp edges or broken glass. Netto will ensure that it is dealt with in an environmentally responsible manner at no cost to you.

You have 28 days from the purchase of your new product to return your waste product with the sales receipt as proof of your purchase and Netto will take it back free of charge.

Alternatively, for further advice on recycling and the recycling of electrical and electronic equipment, visit www.recycle-more.co.uk.

*Netto reserves the right to refuse products that are not safe to handle.
